Sorry to Bother You film poster
Boots Riley (2018, U.S., 111 min.)

Directed by Oakland-based hip hop artist Boots Riley, Sorry to Bother You uses the world of modern call centers to illustrate connections between low-paying work, globalization, unsustainable capitalism, anti-unionization, and the uncertain future of society. Funny, profane, and disturbing, the film was named among the best of 2018 by the AV Club, Vox, New York Magazine, The New Yorker, and The Chicago Tribune.

(Screened as part of Penn State’s MLK Jr. Week Celebration)

This surrealist comic moral tale, about a poor man selling his soul to ascend in a golden elevator to the heights of a dubious corporation is a balls-to-the-wall, tits-to-the-glass, spectacular orgy of fist-pumping, anti-capitalist, pro-labor ideas rolled into [a] gloriously unpredictable plot.
